“LOCAL SCHOOLS # LOCAL ENERGY”
city of LAMIA
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
By working together with the local community and the local farmers, we are reducing the heating costs of the 1st and the 17th primary schools of Lamia by switching to local clean energy.
- Reduce the energy cost: Starting with a 10% cost reduction and gradually reaching 40%.
- Clean Local Energy: We stop using oil from the Middle East. Local biomass from local farmers is adequate to provide heating to local schools and generate local wealth
- Local Community engagement: This is not just another project FOR the local community, this is a project WITH the local community. We work with local farmers, citizens and parents on how their role on local clean energy production and energy saving could turn from passive to active.
- Catalyst: The project to work as a catalyst for raising awareness and attract interest and capital for more local and citizen-based green energy projects to be developed. That way we can generate local wealth, jobs and social capital
The story so far…
Work with the local community
We ran a series of open discussions with local stakeholders, farmers and the municipality of Lamia in order to turn to oil-free local schools by using the excess of biomass available in this rural region.
Our intention is to work on specific ways where parents, farmers and citizens can become active members, as well as co-investors and co-owners of local energy projects
City to farm
Together with AgroKnow and Stevia Hellas Cooperative we organized an event about rural development, sustainable farming, entrepreneurship and citizen-based decentralized local energy production.
Together with Stevia Hellas Cooperative, the municipality of Lamia and the university of Thessaly we ran a pilot project on pellet production. The biomass used was municipality biomass leftovers (mainly from municipality trees) and leftovers from crops of local farmers.
Together with a local school and Stevia Hellas cooperative we organized a green energy event, as part of the European Energy week. The children wrote an amazing poem on… community energy!
Energy for all
Together with Stevia Hellas cooperative we organized an event on citizen-based local energy production models.
